There have been many Christian teachers or mystics who have explained the effects of contemplative prayer, but not how to do it. Fr. Jalics has filled this void with a suggestion that was born through a personal experience of detention and isolation that took place under the Argentine dictatorship. In this Notebook, which begins with a magnificent prologue by Xavier Melloni, he explains how his contemplative “journey” of prayer is tied into the practice of the Ignatian Exercises.

A Jesuit, originally from Hungary, he is the author of numerous spiritual books, among which are Contemplative Retreat: An introduction to the contemplative way of life and to the Jesus Prayer (2003), and The Contemplative Way: Quietly savoring God’s presence (2011). His method of giving the Exercises, in part the fruit of the spiritual experience which he lived during his detention under the Argentine dictatorship, is followed by many individuals and groups, which has made it into a point of reference in the area of spirituality and accompaniment. he died in February 2021
